a Photographic Journey by Meryl

Scissored

going, going
halfway gone
headed south
oh so strong

scissored arms
scissored legs
moving past me
my own egg

Today I will be driving with my daughter to her new home
in the city where she will be starting her adult life. Quite a milestone
in her life and mine. Half of me wants to hold onto that little girl, the one
who hung onto my leg, who wouldn’t leave my side, who asked question after
question until they became too difficult for me to answer. The other half is mesmerized
by her mind, her beauty, but mostly by her strength and perseverance.
I’m sad, but oh so proud.

  1. Congratulations and enjoy. I received so much joy out of being a part of helping my daughters set up their own home. You are right, a very exciting moment for both but both experience some conflicting feelings as well.

  4. Congratulations with your daughter. It’s definitely going be quite a change, and I do understand your dual emotions. As parents our role changes as our small ones grow bigger. I once heard that our children aren’t ours but only on loan. The hope is that we have taught them enough about life so that they can make it on their own when the times come.

    • She’s certainly has a running start, but you’re right, I hope she’ll find her way, whatever that is….and me too now that my job is done…thanks for the insightful comment as always, Otto.

  6. I fear the day when my daughters will do the same … Your beautiful words reminded me that the scissors which cut also fashion new lives …

    • Yes, I previously titled this image Scissored so when I chose it for this post, the metaphor seemed apt… enjoy your girls for as long as you can…:-)
